At the urging of several people, some of whom I even like, I’ve finally decided to take my first tentative steps into the world of blogging. I’ve hesitated for so long primarily because bloggers are such an unsavory lot for the most part. But after careful consideration of that fact, I found no defensible reason for my failure to participate. I shudder at what lies ahead. I feel as though I’m poised at the Pillars of Hercules, looking west at a very large nothing.
But if Columbus could do it, I certainly can. And if the worst that can happen to me is to meet Columbus’ fate (to have a town in Ohio named after him), then I guess I’m ready to make the leap.
The Internet, it seems to me, is a vast garbage dumpster into which everything, the Picassos and chewing gum wrappers, have been quite unceremoniously flung. It’s been left to us to dig through the remains of someone’s Swanson fried-chicken dinner in order to find the treasures lurking underneath. It is my hope that this blog falls somewhere between those two extremes. I have no doubt that if I manage to find some readers, they will waste no time in letting me know whether or not I’ve hit my target.
